Burns, bites and BBQ fails: Urgent or emergent?

Let's break it down

The last weeks of summer bring sunshine, adventure and plenty of opportunities for fun before the transition to fall—but also a few too many "oops" moments. Whether it's a tumble on a trail or a barbecue that didn't sit right, knowing whether to head to Grande Ronde Hospital's Urgent Care or the Emergency Department can save time, money and unnecessary worry.

Here's your sunny-day cheat sheet:

Top reasons for summer urgent care visits

GRH Urgent Care is your go-to when it's not quite an emergency, but you still need timely care.

  1. Dehydration and heat exhaustion. Feeling dizzy or nauseous after too much sun? See us before it turns serious.
  2. Sunburns and skin injuries. We treat painful sunburns, rashes and scrapes from summer adventures gone sideways.
  3. Insect bites and allergies. Mosquitoes, ticks and bees are out in force. If it's itchy but not life-threatening, we've got you.
  4. Sprains, strains and minor fractures. From weekend warriors to backyard mishaps, we treat plenty of sore ankles and twisted knees.
  5. Cuts and wounds. Did you slice your finger while making salsa? Gardening injury? We can handle stitches and tetanus updates.
  6. GI issues. Picnic potato salad not sitting well? We'll help sort it out.
  7. Water-related slips. Minor slips and scrapes from pool decks or boats are common and treatable.

Top reasons for summer ER visits

When it's serious or life-threatening, go straight to GRH's Emergency Department or call 911.

  1. Heatstroke. Confusion, fainting or vomiting in the heat? Don't wait—this is an emergency.
  2. Severe burns. Fireworks, grills and campfires can turn the festive into frightening—serious burns need emergency care.
  3. Major orthopedic injuries. Broken bones, dislocations or serious head injuries need ER-level care.
  4. Drowning and near-drowning. Every second counts—especially with children.
  5. ATV and bike accidents. Crashes can lead to head trauma or internal injuries.
  6. Severe allergic reactions. Swelling of the face or trouble breathing? ER, no question.
  7. Chest or abdominal pain. It might be appendicitis. Or your heart. Don't guess—GO.
  8. Mental health crises. Summer isn't easy for everyone. If it's urgent, the ER is the right call.
