Muscles and nerves: Are they working together?

If not, you could be a candidate for neurology services.

Our amazing human bodies are designed to function at optimum performance. In particular, our nerves and muscles work together as a team, whether we are working and playing hard or resting peacefully.

But if this team stops functioning properly as a result of injury or disease, that delicate neuromuscular synthesis is interrupted. The results can range from a pain in the neck to a total loss of function in our arms or legs.

That’s when the services of a neurologist are needed to get our bodies back to functioning at optimum performance.

A neurologist is a physician who specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the central nervous system, which consists of the brain, spinal cord and the thousands of nerves in our bodies. Neurologists perform testing for brain and muscle function, as well as inner ear and central motor functions and balance.

Some of the more common neurological and neuromuscular diseases and conditions treated by a neurologist are Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, dementia, brain tumors, strokes, seizures and myasthenia gravis—a neuromuscular disorder characterized by variable weakness of voluntary muscles.

Neurologists also treat involuntary facial tics, tremors, wryneck, migraine headaches, upper and lower back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, and syncope—a disorder that results in temporary loss of consciousness.

Close-to-home care

The specialty services offered by neurologists are usually found in larger urban areas, so Eastern Oregon is very fortunate to welcome Rodrigo Lim, MD.

Before moving to La Grande, Dr. Lim spent 14 years in private practice in New Jersey. He completed a neuromuscular fellowship at the Montefiore Medical Center, which is affiliated with the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York. He completed his neurology residency at New York’s St. Vincent’s Hospital, serving as chief resident, and his internal medicine residency at the Jersey City Medical Center, N.J.
